PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT: TRAINING CLASSES FOR MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS

From July 7 through September 11, the following five classes will be offered in repeated cycles so that there will be ample opportunity for participation. Classes can be taken in any order. Supervisors may enroll in all sessions, or any individual sessions they feel will hone their skills.  This summer’s offerings will be at no cost to participants.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT: 3-4 hours
Course Code: HR01; Location: Room 206; Dates: Tu, 7/15, 9-1; Tu, 7/22, 1-5; Th, 8/14, 1-5; Th, 8/21, 1-5
Objectives:  Participants will understand the dynamic new approach to performance management being implemented at Berkeley as the basis for succession management, and how the upgraded HRMS will facilitate the performance evaluation process.  The discussion will cover the importance of having a common set of core competencies, a common rating scale, and shared language as the foundation for developing strategies on behalf of individuals and the institution.  In addition, specifics of the Berkeley performance evaluation components, interpreting the rating scale and the evaluation process will be discussed. Instructors: Berkeley HR professionals.

COACHING FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE: 8 hours total (two four-hour classes, one month apart)

Objectives: Participants will learn the differences between coaching and traditional managing, be able to distinguish between coaching for performance and coaching for development, know how to prepare for a coaching conversation, learn and use a coaching model, and practice and prepare to give both positive and constructive feed back.  Instructor: Aubrey Cramer, M.Ed., has been a manager, leadership coach and change management consultant to leaders and their organizations. She has published and presented her work both nationally and internationally. Increasing organizational excellence by linking people, processes, systems and technology has been at the heart of her work. She has extensive experience in both the private and public sectors across the United States and around the globe.

COMMUNICATING GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS: 4 hours
Course Code: HR03; Location: Room 208; Dates: Mon, 7/14, 9-1; Wed, 7/30, 1-5; Tu, 8/12, 1-5; Th, 8/28, 9-1
Objectives:  Participants will learn how goals and performance standards fit into the performance management cycle and the performance evaluation process, understand the differences and similarities between setting goals and establishing performance standards, write goals and performance standards using SMART criteria, and align individual goals with department and organizational goals. Instructor: Rich Ragan, M.S., CPT, named Honored Instructor in 2004, is principal of the Ragan Group, specializing in building high-performance work teams, conducting executive and strategic coaching, and training HR development professionals. He has been a UC Berkeley Extension instructor for more than 20 years, is active in the American Society of Training and Development, and is a certified Performance Technologist. Previously, he was manager of corporate training for Wells Fargo.

MANAGING IN A UNION ENVIRONMENT: 4 hours
Course Code: HR04; Location: Room 206; Dates: Wed, 7/9, 9-1; Th, 7/24, 1-5; Mon, 8/4, 9-1; Tu, 8/19, 1-5
Objectives:  Participants will understand the basics of collective bargaining, be able to identify and rely on management rights specified in labor contracts, understand union rights and employee rights, and be better able to communicate appropriately with covered employees and their union representatives. Instructor: Resa Peay-Wainwright is a recognized expert in Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness. For more than 20 years, she has led and instructed change initiatives and administration operations within academic, business, not-for-profit, and public organizations, and has an extensive background as a senior HR practitioner in employee and labor relations, performance management, policy development, investigations, legal compliance, and talent management.

CONDUCTING DIFFICULT PERFORMANCE CONVERSATIONS: 4 hours
Course Code: HR05; Location: Room 206; Dates: Th, 7/10, 1-5; Mon, 7/28, 9-1; Tu, 8/5, 1-5; Wed, 8/27, 9-1
Objectives:  Participants will better understand the supervisor’s responsibility for having performance conversations, be able to provide formal and informal feedback for corrective action, value the importance of documentation, clearly articulate expectations and how they have not been met, address behaviors and develop plans for improving them, and be able to deal with negative emotions and reactions.  Instructor: Roberta Streimer, M.A., Founder of Organizational Diplomacy with over 25 years of consulting experience in over 50 organizations. Consulting includes organizational assessment, strategic planning, program design, process improvement, facilitation, mediation and training. She has taught for UC Extension for 10 years, is a Court Mediator and frequent conference presenter.
